Is APPPA right for me?
We have an open membership, meaning anyone who wants to join can do so. APPPA provides resources for farms that produce, process, or market pastured poultry.
What kind of community resources do I get access to after I become a member?
APPPA hosts a community website that will give you access to peer discussion groups, training videos (on brooding, processing, profit, production, marketing, and more), spreadsheets, APPPA Grit archives, and more.
I want to add other people from my farm to my membership. How can I do that?
That is a great idea! By adding team members – husbands, wives, partners, or employees – to your membership, you can give each person individual access to all APPPA member benefits. Each person will be able to participate in the group discussions, receive an individual APPPA Grit subscription, explore our resources, and more. No more shared passwords and no more giving your team members half the benefits. Contact info@apppa.org for additional information.
Do you offer scholarships for membership?
We do not offer scholarships on memberships. Your APPPA membership will pay for itself in a number of ways. You’ll find ways to reduce mortality, increase productivity, or just plain think differently about the problems that have stumped you. Not only will these improvements pay dividends to your existing flock, but you’ll carry that knowledge with you for every future flock.
What do you mean by pastured poultry?
While opinions vary on what makes the pastured poultry model, APPPA advocates for pastured systems that utilize mobile shelters during the pasture season.
How many chickens do members typically raise?
In 2023, we conducted a member survey and discovered that our members raise, on average:
2,553 meat birds per year
642 layers per year.
365 turkeys per year.
Our smallest homestead producers will typically raise a couple hundred birds while our more enterprise focused member producers could raise thousands of layers and hundreds of thousands of meat birds.
I haven't started farming, should I become a member?
It’s common for new farmers to connect with APPPA members and glean information prior to raising their first birds. Our training library has a wealth of knowledge to help you get off to a great start.
